My approach
I value an open, collaborative conversation where we can ask questions and make room for things that are difficult to say. You bring your knowledge of yourself and your life; I bring my psychological knowledge and professional experience. Together, we try to understand what is making life difficult and what might help.
The relationship we build is central to my work. What happens between us in a conversation can also help us understand something about your relationships with other people. If something doesn’t feel right, or I have misunderstood you, I want us to be able to talk about it.
I draw on systemic and psychodynamic perspectives, considering your difficulties in the context of your life, relationships and the experiences that have shaped you. Alongside understanding your story, I am interested in how you experience it in the moment: the feelings and physical sensations that come up as we talk. Where helpful, I bring in mindfulness to support awareness of what you feel and how you respond.
My integrative approach is also influenced by ACT, AEDP and EFT. ACT offers ways of relating more flexibly to thoughts and feelings and acting in line with what matters to you. AEDP and EFT place particular emphasis on emotional experience and the therapeutic relationship. I draw on these ideas according to your needs and what emerges in our conversations, at a pace we agree together.
